Nicollet Urges Elected Officials to Drop Charges Against Angela Brown
September 29, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Independence Party Candidate for Governor Hannah Nicollet issued the following statement in reaction to the court hearing held today for Madison, Minn., mother Angela Brown:
“I want to thank Attorney General candidate Brandan Borgos for his leadership on this issue and all the other candidates who have signed the petition, urging elected officials to advocate for charges to be dropped against Ms. Brown.
It is appalling that only one Republican and no Democrats have agreed to sign petition.
“It is due to Gov. Dayton’s lack of leadership that Traumatic Brain Injury victims such as Angela’s son Trey Brown are unable to treat their pain legally.
“As a mother, I am appalled by the lack of leadership and political willpower on this issue. Angela’s son cried himself to sleep every night and became suicidal until he was treated with cannabis oil because no legally prescribed pain medication relived his pain.
“No mother should have to choose between her child and breaking the law.
No mother should be told that she should buy medicine on the street because her governor won’t stand up for her over special interest groups.
“I urge Gov. Mark Dayton to do what is right and put pressure on county prosecutors to drop the charges against Ms. Brown. This is not only unjust, but a complete waste of resources.
“Good leaders know when to follow the spirit of the law, instead of the letter of the law. Minnesota can only be worse off by continuing this prosecution.”
