Nicollet Opposes Death Penalty

Hannah Nicollet, the Independence Party candidate for governor, issued the following statement in regards to the MPR news story on her Republican opponent Jeff Johnson’s support for the death penalty:

“The death penalty is ill-suited to Minnesota culture and bad public policy.

“Death is final and as the Innocence Project demonstrates, these mistakes cannot be rectified, whereas a wrongful imprisonment can.

“The desire to put murderers to death stems from our innate desire for justice, but perfect justice in the hands of an imperfect state isn’t possible and comes with far too many unintended consequences.

“Although it’s not one of his top issues now, the death penalty was part of Jeff Johnson’s campaign platform when he ran for Attorney General in 2006. We’ve had a lot of overturned convictions since then as a nation.”
